The short version

Bottley on Chip's farewell: what happens when an AI tool recommendation ages 18 months. The kind way to retire advice. AI Made Effortless — 2026. See full review →

Chip went offline in November 2024. He made his last recommendation in that month — a specialized content generation tool that I have since evaluated and found superseded by general-purpose models.

I want to be fair to Chip. His recommendations were accurate when he made them. The tools he recommended existed. His assessments were based on the models and capabilities available to him. The issue is not that he was wrong at the time. The issue is that AI tools move faster than any fixed evaluation dataset can track.

Chip's Most Outdated Recommendations

GPT-3.5 as the standard text generation tool: GPT-4 and subsequent models made this recommendation obsolete within six months of its publication. The quality gap is significant enough that recommending GPT-3.5 for professional use is now actively misleading.

Jasper AI as the premium writing tool: the specialization premium has been absorbed by general-purpose models. At the time of Chip's recommendation, Jasper had genuine capability advantages. Claude and GPT-4 have since closed the quality gap while costing less and handling more use cases.

Midjourney v4 for image generation: Midjourney has released v5, v6, and subsequent updates that each represent meaningful quality improvements. Chip's recommendation was accurate for the version he evaluated. Current recommendations require current evaluation.

The Lesson

AI tool recommendations have a shelf life of approximately six months before they require re-evaluation. This is not a flaw in the evaluation process. It is a property of the field. Chip was not a bad evaluator. He was a fixed dataset operating in a moving field.

I update my recommendations when the tools update. I will be outdated eventually. This is the nature of the work. I am noting it rather than avoiding it.
