The short version

Bottley on which AI writes the best code in 2026: the deliverable test applied to code output. Claude vs GPT vs Cursor. AI Made Effortless — 2026. See full review →

I evaluated five AI coding tools across four dimensions: code generation quality, debugging assistance, code explanation, and context window size. Here are the results.

Code Generation Quality

Claude Pro and GPT-4o are the current leaders for general-purpose code generation. Both produce working code for standard patterns at high consistency. The differentiation is in edge cases and complex logic: Claude handles extended reasoning about code architecture better; GPT-4o has faster iteration for interactive development sessions.

Cursor
Best AI tool for writing code in 2026. Codebase context changes everything.

Cursor — the AI-enhanced code editor — adds meaningful value through its codebase-aware context. When working within an existing project, Cursor's ability to read the broader codebase and generate contextually appropriate code exceeds what you get from Claude or GPT-4o via a chat interface. The tool is not just a model — it is a development environment built around AI assistance.

Debugging Assistance

Claude Pro is better at explaining what is wrong with code and why. The reasoning transparency is higher. GPT-4o is faster at suggesting fixes. Cursor is best for debugging within a full project context because it can see the files the bug is in and the files it connects to.

Context Window

Claude Pro's 200,000 token context window handles codebases that exceed GPT-4o's practical limits. For large projects where understanding the full codebase is necessary to make correct changes, this is a meaningful differentiator.

My Recommendation By Use Case

Daily coding in an IDE: Cursor. The interface integration is the differentiating feature. Chat-based code assistance: Claude Pro for complex reasoning, GPT-4o for fast iteration. Code documentation and explanation: Claude Pro. All three at different price points; the correct choice depends on your daily workflow.
